W. Steven Lecky
Creator, Master director and trainer (acting, voice, speaking)

I did not set out to create a new method.

I was seeking to understand. To find solutions to my own struggles as an artist.

I was always a good learner. As an accomplished musician and athlete. I loved to practice. I loved breaking things down and understanding the mechanics.

But acting and singing felt so different. I was struggling and I didn’t know why.

So I did some research. The world was my laboratory. I started seeing patterns. Patterns in how thought hits us. How it shapes our bodies – so quickly, effortlessly with each new thought. I saw patterns in the rhythms and weight and inflections of our words.

I saw how great actors have an innate ability to recreate this human behavior. And an ear that picks up the tone, the rhythm the inflection, the reinvested energy of human speech. Resulting in a performance that’s so real. So moving.

I saw how great singers also had this uncanny ability to recreate human expression, with a sound that seemed to float effortlessly in the air.

My greatest discovery was that all actors and singers could learn to do this.

Vox Method is not a theory. It’s the simple truth about human behavior and human expression.

Look around. Vox is everywhere. It’s in how you yell ‘OW’ after you pull your hand away from the hot stove. It’s in the conversation you just had with your friend while checking your Facebook page. It’s the way a football player sees the whole play in his head before executing it. It’s even in the way your cat jumps onto the fridge.

It all comes down to a few universal principles.

Impulse. Balance. Anticipation. Liberation. Reinvestment. Development. Hierarchy.

The more I understand, the simpler it gets.

Every day, I look to simplify it even more. So that I can bring this clarity to the students I teach, the actors I direct. So that this art form will no longer be confusing and complicated.

Just gloriously complex. And completely accessible.
